چکیده
Abstract Although Carcinus maenas as a species is widely studied, research focusing on fecundity still scarce. The main objective of this study was to evaluate size-fecundity relationships across different lagoons and estuaries, along the Portuguese coast, understand how local environment affects reproductive patterns. Between 2019 2020, ovigerous females were collected from Southern (Ria Formosa Ria de Alvor), Central (Rio Sado) Northern regions Aveiro) Portugal, each female estimated by counting weighing eggs. Morphometric (carapace width–egg counting; egg counting–egg weight; body wet weight–egg carapace width–body weight) inferred 180 egg-bearing with width between 26.96 61.25 mm. A positive correlation morphological parameters observed. Differences in found among all systems, northern southern varying 22121 408538 eggs per female. Furthermore, regional gradient observed regions, lower temperature estuaries displaying an increase fecundity. Rio Sado also affected salinity. Fecundity differences associated hydrodynamics, temperature, salinity systems. No statistically significant Carapace Width—Body Wet Weight regressions performed studied system, indicating that, contrary fecundity, somatic growth C. not latitudinal or environmental conditions.

Cadmium in the shore crab Carcinus maenas along the Norwegian coast: geographical and seasonal variation and correlation to physiological parameters
Previously, high concentrations of cadmium have been found in the hepatopancreas of the edible or brown crab (Cancer pagurus) sampled from positions north of about 67° N, compared to regions further south along the Norwegian coast, with no clear understanding why. In order to study a similar organism in the same ecosystem, the present study analyzed 210 shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) from four d...
متن کاملLack of adult novel northern lineages of invasive green crab Carcinus maenas along much of the northern US Atlantic coast.
Introduced over 200 yr ago to the east coast of North America, Carcinus maenas now ranges from New York to Newfoundland. In the 1980s, a secondary invasion of European lineages, termed northern haplotypes, occurred in Nova Scotia. Young-of-the-year sampled in 2007 revealed that northern haplotypes were present in low frequencies at several northwestern Atlantic sites as far south as New York; a...
متن کاملDevelopment and Application of Microsatellites in Carcinus maenas: Genetic Differentiation between Northern and Central Portuguese Populations
Carcinus maenas, the common shore crab of European coastal waters, has recently gained notoriety due to its globally invasive nature associated with drastic ecological and economic effects. The native ubiquity and worldwide importance of C. maenas has resulted in it becoming one of the best-studied estuarine crustacean species globally. Accordingly, there is significant interest in investigatin...
متن کاملA histopathological survey of shore crab (Carcinus maenas) and brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) from six estuaries in the United Kingdom.
Invertebrates show considerable potential as sentinel organisms for the monitoring of the health status of aquatic systems. They are generally small, abundant, relatively sessile, and may readily bioaccumulate toxins. Cascade-like stress responses can occur following acute or chronic exposures to contaminated environments and as such, the overall health status of individuals within those enviro...
متن کاملAsymmetry and fighting performance in the shore crab Carcinus maenas.
Fluctuating asymmetries (left-right differences in symmetric traits) can be negatively related to fitness parameters in a number of biological systems. Hence, it has been suggested that symmetric individuals should outcompete asymmetric individuals during intraspecific agonistic encounters. However, there is a lack of experimental evidence for such a relationship. We investigated the relationsh...
